Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become starving," said a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
