One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will produce two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple at most releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
