A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
