2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Feedback
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a clearer direction.
The president noted that the team is now refining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the entire text from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last fall’s the game testing phase was informative. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a clearer brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our fans.
The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the remarkable progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the latest Lead of 31st Union. After several months of talks, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and background in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to persist seeing the development of the game in the months to ahead.
The President
Experience of the New Head
Brinkman presently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year alongside a early access event. Then, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the official summary states. "Take on the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and tests that shift every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or go big, risk it all, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The decision is yours."
Project Ethos lacks an official release date or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as development continues.
